Hiking out this morning I wanted to make 19 miles to get to Stafford. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in town but I realized that I needed to get a new water filter or a washer for my old one that is leaking. I climbed up and over 3 peaks that looked doable on paper but proved formidable on the hard. I realized at this pace I would not get to the road before 7 o’clock so I began to think about camping along the road and going into town the next day. My legs were heavy, my heart was just not into it. As I crested the last peak and headed down the mountain I met a cute young couple I imagined to be from West Virginia. The guy told me about a “go to town for free card” posted at the bottom of the trail. I hustled down the hill best as I could and found the business card stuck to a tree. I never would have seen it if I didnt take the time to talk to the couple. Now I am staying with a retired Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer near Stratton along with a retired USMC Major and an 18 year old Indiana boy who has been here for longer than he can remember. I decided to 0 here. My legs are weary, I have the time, and Tom, the owner is just an all around great guy. The only 0 I took for myself the entire trip was trail days in Damascus VA. My othe 20 + days were family reasons so now I hope to get some extra rest for my final assault. I only have Mt Bigalow and the 100 mile wilderness between me and Katahdin.
What is less than 200 and more than 2000? This guy! I have less than 200 miles to go and completed over 2000 miles in one calendar year!!
Wow!!

Hey you are not going to believe this! And I don’t know if anybody else has told you this, but you have inspired a new movie called ” A walk in the Woods”. It stars Robert Redford and Nick Nolte! I am having a hard time figuring out which one of those characters is supposed to be you! We’ll have to watch the movie together when you get back, so you can relive all the wonderful events that they have put in the movie of your hike! God Bless.

I was reading your posts thinking to myself….why isn’t Andy using some of those US Airways miles for a hotel room?! 🙂 Good luck on the last leg of your journey –
